THE INVISIBLE GOD

The Invisible God

Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen. 1Timothy 1:17

What would you say to someone who says, “I have never seen God, nor have you.  How do you know what you believe is true and mine is not?”

First, we have to consider that there things which are invisible to the eye and yet we are confident and trust that they exist:

Numbers and Mathematical equations
Theories
Thoughts
Feelings
The whole universe.
Neutrons, protons and electrons.
Time, including the past or the future.

God’s invisibility means the He is far beyond the human capability to see. It is because God is Spirit, which is a higher form of existence. Another philosophical term for God is that He is incorporeal - meaning to be without the composition of physical matter. God is not constrained nor limited by physical matter. Neither is He restrained by time nor space. He transcends them.

Do not see His invisibility as a defect on His part but rather as a limitation on our part. It is not His lack of ability to be seen but rather our inability to see.

Imagine someone living in a two dimensional world, like a drawing on a flat piece of paper. Those that live on that paper cannot observe you from above, as you hold a pencil. It is only until your touch that paper with your pencil or finger that they can “see you”, since you are three dimensional. How much more God transcends us. And yet He enters our world and works in our world.

Or imagine having a bacteria on your hand and yet the bacteria has no idea of your existence because it is unable to see you. The reason? It’s inability. You could of course as a much transcendent being make yourself known to the bacteria by acting upon it’s world.

And yet, the good news of God's invisibility is that God has revealed Himself to us, to those who cannot see.

So how do you experience and know the invisible God? With some immaterial objects, we can observe their effects. The same can be applied to God. We can observe His.

  • You can observe His works, in creation and His sovereign hand in your life and those around you - just as you can know an artist by their work.
  • You can listen with your spirit from His words.
  • You can set your mind upon Him.
  • You feel and experience him in your spirit. Some call this noetic perception - mystical experience. It happens in prayer and worship. We have the ability to use a different kind of vision:  Looking with my soul, my heart and my mind.  I may not see Him physically but I talk with Him.  I hear Him – but not with my ears.  I can never explain it.

But more importantly, we can see God in the Son.

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. Colossians 1:15
Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” John 20:29

Seek Him today. You don’t need your eyes as much as you do your mind, your heart and your Spirit. It is then that our real eyes are open to truly see.

More Scriptures:

Exodus 33:20  20 But He added, “You cannot see my face, for no one can see me and live.”

John 5:37  37 And the Father who sent me has Himself testified about me. You people have never heard His voice nor seen His form at any time,

Romans 1:20  20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, because they are understood through what has been made. So people are without excuse.

1 Timothy 6:16  16 He alone possesses immortality and lives in unapproachable light, whom no human has ever seen or is able to see. To Him be honor and eternal power! Amen.
